Dáil Votes 118 to 28 to Lift Dublin Airport Passenger Cap
The Dáil voted 118 to 28 to lift Dublin Airport’s 32 million annual passenger cap, a 2007 planning condition. This decision aims to boost economic growth but raises environmental and congestion concerns. Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien pledged sustainable growth and an environmental assessment.
The Dáil has voted 118 to 28 to pass the Dublin Airport (Passenger Capacity) Bill, lifting the 32 million annual passenger cap. This legislation, introduced in 2007 as a condition for a second terminal, will now proceed to the Seanad.
The cap, which aimed to balance economic growth with environmental impact, has been a source of legal dispute for years. Its removal is expected to boost economic growth and airline competition, potentially lowering airfares, but raises concerns about increased emissions and local congestion.
Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, stated the airport will grow sustainably and will consider an environmental impact assessment by An Coimisiún Pleanála before signing the final order. The government prioritized immediate economic demands over environmental goals.
