Taoiseach Hopes Aughinish Alumina Export Investigation Concludes in Weeks; Nationalisation Not Planned

Taoiseach Micheál Martin anticipates the investigation into Aughinish Alumina's Russian-linked exports will conclude in weeks. He stated nationalisation is not planned, despite international scrutiny over claims its product aids Russia's war in Ukraine. Martin emphasized the material's importance to European industry and employee welfare.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin expects the investigation into Aughinish Alumina’s exports to conclude within weeks. He confirmed that nationalisation of the Co Limerick company is «not on the agenda right now».

The company faces international scrutiny due to its Russian links. Aughinish Alumina, located in Foynes, is owned by Rusal, which is controlled by Oleg Deripaska, an ally of Putin. Claims suggest the Irish product has been used in arms manufacturing for the Russian military in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Ireland’s investigation into the Russian-owned plant’s exports during a Dublin Castle press conference. Martin noted that Europe has not sanctioned alumina, highlighting broader issues beyond the investigation, including the material's importance to European industry. He also acknowledged the impact on employees' livelihoods.
