Riad Bouchaker: Parnell Square Attacker's Solitary Life and Lack of Public Images
Riad Bouchaker, the Parnell Square attacker, led a solitary life with few public images available. Despite defense claims of dementia, he was ruled fit for trial. An Garda Síochána refused to release his photo post-conviction, citing no legal basis. Bouchaker is now in prison, likely to remain isolated for his protection.
Riad Bouchaker, born in Algeria in 1973, led a solitary life with few friends in Ireland, associating mainly with his brother. He moved to Ireland about 20 years ago, following his brother. In 2021, he underwent surgery for a benign brain tumour, resulting in a visible scar and an unprotected brain area. He also reported 15 years of shoulder pain, insisting his issues were physical, not mental.
On November 23, 2023, CCTV showed Bouchaker meeting his brother before ripping up a document. He told gardaí his brother explained a letter about refused disability benefits, though the trial only showed a request for further documentation for supplementary welfare. During garda interviews, he expressed upset over social welfare refusal and initially claimed amnesia regarding the Parnell Square attacks. Later, he admitted remembering but claimed to be «sick» and «not in his right mind», focusing on his own grievances. Gardaí eventually told him, «the children are not ok, Riad».
Defense experts argued Bouchaker had moderate dementia from surgery and injuries sustained during the attack, deeming him unfit for trial. However, Judge Tony Hunt ruled him fit, preferring prosecution expert testimony that Bouchaker understood the proceedings with accommodations like an intermediary and frequent breaks. Throughout the trial, Bouchaker exhibited inappropriate jocularity, smiling and joking even during harrowing testimony about the five-year-old victim's injuries. He also had a court outburst, shouting «kill yourself, Irish shit» and criticizing Ireland.
No public photographs of Bouchaker were available during the trial due to his solitary life and lack of online presence. He had no social media and wasn't involved in activities where he might be photographed. When charged in December 2023, he was brought directly into the Criminal Courts of Justice through internal corridors, preventing photo opportunities. The only existing photo, circulating since November 2023, shows him on the ground after the attack, tended to by a paramedic; this was not shown to the jury. RTÉ footage of him being put into an ambulance was also withheld until after the trial.
An Garda Síochána declined RTÉ's request to release a post-conviction photo, stating there was «no legal basis» to do so, as images of arrested individuals are for policing purposes only and must be destroyed in certain circumstances. Bouchaker is currently in Cloverhill Prison on a vulnerable prisoners' landing and may be transferred to Midlands Prison after sentencing in October, likely spending most of his sentence in isolation for his own protection.
