Dublin Hospital Car Parks Full by 9 AM, Impacting Patients Traveling from Outside City

Tony Corcoran supports later hospital appointments for non-Dublin patients but notes Dublin hospital car parks are full by 9 AM. This forces patients to queue, causing stress and discomfort. Solutions include expanding hospital parking or creating dedicated bus routes.

Tony Corcoran of Rathfarnham, Dublin 14, supports Bobby Carty’s suggestion (Letters, June 30th) that hospital appointments for patients traveling from outside Dublin should be scheduled later in the day. However, Corcoran highlights a significant issue associated with this proposal: the consistent lack of parking availability at Dublin hospitals.

Corcoran observes that nearly all Dublin hospital car parks are typically full by 9 AM. Consequently, patients arriving from outside Dublin after this time are often forced to wait in their vehicles in a queue outside the hospital, relying on a one-out-one-in system for a parking space. This situation not only causes stress but also presents practical discomforts, such as the inability to access restrooms or obtain refreshments.

Corcoran suggests limited solutions to this problem. Hospitals could expand their existing, often expensive, car parks, or Dublin Bus could establish dedicated routes to these medical facilities. As an alternative for those able to walk short distances, he proposes parking at a nearby shopping center, which often offers free parking, allowing patients to combine their trip with shopping on their return journey.
