Zelenskyy Thanks Ireland, Urges Sanctions, Discusses Limerick Plant at EU Presidency Opening

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Ireland for its support at the EU Presidency opening, urging new sanctions against Russia. He discussed the Russian-owned Aughinish alumina plant and declined an offer of outdated Irish vehicles, preferring drone investment. Ireland affirmed non-lethal military support while maintaining neutrality.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Ireland for its support at the official opening of Ireland's EU Presidency in Dublin Castle. He expressed gratitude to Taoiseach Micheál Martin and the Irish people, emphasizing the importance of relationships based on mutual respect.

Zelenskyy urged continued EU sanctions against Russia's shadow fleet and companies in Europe that supply the aggressor, even if owned or controlled by sanctioned Russian oligarchs. He also addressed concerns about the Russian-owned Aughinish alumina plant in Foynes, Co Limerick, which is operated by Rusal and controlled by Oleg Deripaska. While not named in his speech, the plant was discussed with Taoiseach Martin, with Zelenskyy welcoming an investigation but hoping for swift results.

Key issues for Ireland's presidency include security and defence, with Zelenskyy highlighting maritime security and drone deals. He also urged Ukrainian civilians to heed air sirens due to Russian threats of escalation. Taoiseach Martin affirmed Ireland's commitment to providing military support, clarifying that this does not include lethal weapons due to Ireland's neutrality. Zelenskyy politely declined an offer of Irish vehicles, stating their technology was too old and upgrading them would be too costly compared to investing in drones.
