Zelensky Thanks Ireland for Support, Urges EU Action Against Russia at Dublin Castle

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Ireland for its support at the opening of its EU presidency. He urged new sanctions against Russia and highlighted Ukraine's military expertise as crucial for European security. Ireland's six-month presidency will focus on competitiveness, values, and security.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Ireland for its unwavering support since the start of Russia’s invasion, addressing the opening ceremony of Ireland's EU presidency at Dublin Castle. He congratulated Ireland on its presidency, emphasizing the responsibility to protect lives and values from Russia's aggression and to foster stability across Europe.

Zelensky highlighted Ukraine's essential military expertise, particularly in air defense and maritime security, stating that European security is impossible without it. He urged collective action to end the war, stressing that Putin must face conditions making it impossible to continue fighting. Zelensky also called for new EU sanctions against Russia and criticized European companies that continue to work for or are controlled by Russia and its sanctioned oligarchs.

Ireland will hold the EU presidency for six months, its eighth time in the role, with priorities focused on competitiveness, values, and security. Zelensky was greeted by Tánaiste Simon Harris upon arrival at Casement Aerodrome. This visit follows his state visit seven months prior, during which drone reports over the Irish Sea prompted security enhancements, including counter-drone technology for the current presidency.
