New, higher income disregards and earnings limits for Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit schemes are effective today. Announced by Minister Dara Calleary, these changes increase limits for single carers to €1,000 and couples to €2,000, benefiting nearly 2,700 carers and moving towards phasing out the means test.

The highest income disregards and earnings limits for Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit schemes have been implemented today, as announced by Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary. These changes, provided for in Budget 2026, take effect immediately.

For a single carer, the income disregard increases from €625 to €1,000. For a couple, it rises from €1,250 to €2,000. The income limit for Carer’s Benefit also increases from €625 to €1,000. Approximately 2,700 carers will see an increase, with 99.9% of Carer’s Allowance recipients now receiving the maximum payment rate.

A carer in a two-adult household can now earn up to €110,000 and retain full Carer’s Allowance, or up to €138,000 for a partial payment. This is an increase from previous limits of €69,500 and €97,500, covering up to 90% of couple households. A single part-time carer can earn up to €50,000 and keep their full allowance.

Carer’s Allowance is a weekly means-tested social welfare payment for those caring for someone due to age, disability, or illness for at least 35 hours per week. Weekly rates vary: €270 (under 66, one person), €308 (over 66, one person), €405 (under 66, two or more people), and €462 (over 66, two or more people). Calleary stated these changes ensure carers access financial aid while providing essential care, moving towards phasing out the Carer’s Allowance means test.
