Proposal: Later Hospital Appointments for Remote Patients to Reduce Stress

Patients in remote areas face stress from early hospital appointments. A proposal suggests scheduling later appointments for those living furthest away, either manually or via an Eircode-based app. This aims to reduce stress, improve assessments, and enhance health outcomes.

Many patients residing in remote areas of the country face significant travel challenges to attend early-morning hospital appointments. This often necessitates either an overnight stay closer to the hospital or departing from home at an exceptionally early hour to ensure timely arrival.

Such arrangements frequently elevate patients’ stress levels and can lead to corresponding increases in blood pressure. A practical solution would involve scheduling appointments later in the day for those patients living furthest from the hospital.

This adjustment could be implemented manually by hospital staff, utilizing patients’ home addresses to determine appropriate appointment times. Alternatively, an innovative application that leverages patients’ Eircodes to automatically calculate distance and required travel times could offer substantial benefits.

Such an app would not only streamline operations by saving hospital staff considerable time and effort in data analysis but also mitigate patient stress, potentially leading to more accurate medical assessments and improved health outcomes. This proposal was submitted by Bobby Carty of Templeogue, Dublin 6W.
