London Climate Action Week: Electrification Key to Climate Action Amidst Heatwave

London Climate Action Week, attended by 100,000, highlighted rapid electrification as the key to combating climate change amidst a heatwave. Michael Liebrich's eight-point plan for cheaper electricity, applied to Ireland, outlines steps like tax reform and smart grid development. Despite political hurdles, strong public support and a focus on renewables aim to halve emissions in five years.

London Climate Action Week gathered 100,000 participants amidst a severe heatwave, with King Charles and the UN Secretary-General emphasizing the urgency of climate action. Despite the evident need, public consensus on a clear path forward remains elusive.

The consistent message from the week was that rapid electrification of the entire energy system offers a viable solution. This involves switching to electricity for transport, heating, cooling, and industry, which would cut emissions and provide immediate health, security, and economic benefits.

Michael Liebrich presented an eight-point plan to «Make Electricity Cheap Again,» which, when applied to Ireland, highlights both opportunities and barriers. Key points include removing taxes on electricity while increasing those on gas, building out a smart grid, and implementing locational pricing to optimize power distribution. Accelerating electrification, fostering new flexible demand (solar, EVs, heat pumps), and delaying investment recovery for grid projects are also crucial.

Political certainty is vital, though the Irish government has shown some retreat from the green agenda, evidenced by the Critical Infrastructure Bill. However, public support for climate action in Ireland remains strong. The plan also advocates for «cleanish power,» combining renewables, energy storage, and existing backup stations to halve emissions again in five years, while cautioning against expensive future technologies like nuclear and green hydrogen for the next two decades.
