Spain's Migrant Regularisation Ends: 360,000 Applications Admissible, 500,000 Expected

Spain's migrant regularisation scheme, launched in April, has ended, with 360,000 of 900,000 applications deemed admissible. The initiative, expected to benefit 500,000, offers legal status to those meeting criteria like a clean record and prior residency. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez champions the policy for economic benefits and migrant rights, despite opposition.

Spain's migrant regularisation scheme, launched in April, concluded today. It was projected to benefit around 500,000 people, mostly from Latin America. Out of 900,000 applications, approximately 360,000 have been deemed «admissible», though not all have been processed.

Applicants needed to prove a clean criminal record and at least five consecutive months in Spain before January 1. Authorities have three months to process paperwork for work and residence permits valid only in Spain. Juana Hernandez, 59, from Cuba, whose application was approved, called it a «huge opportunity» and plans to work at Madrid airport.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez advocates for more open immigration policies, contrasting with tougher measures in other European nations. He argues that migrants contributing to Spain's economy deserve equal rights, citing benefits for sectors like construction. While Spanish business leaders support the move, conservative and far-right opposition are critical, fearing increased irregular immigration, especially as the measure was passed by decree without parliamentary approval.
