French Air Defence Frigate Deploys Off Dublin for EU Presidency Security

A French air defence frigate is positioned off Dublin Bay as part of security measures for Ireland's EU Presidency. This deployment, alongside Irish naval vessels, provides air defence capabilities lacking in the Irish Naval Service. Legal complexities regarding foreign military involvement and rules of engagement have been addressed, with the French crew retaining self-defence rights.

A French air defence frigate has been observed in the Irish Sea off Dublin Bay, positioned 12 to 14 nautical miles from the coast. This deployment is part of enhanced security measures for Ireland's upcoming EU Presidency launch this week. Two other military vessels, including an Irish naval ship, were also present, with all vessels masking their presence on public tracking software.

The French frigate's air defence radar was actively scanning just outside Irish territorial waters, which extend 12 nautical miles offshore. This arrangement addresses the Irish Naval Service's lack of radar capabilities for identifying airborne threats. The multi-role frigate is equipped with powerful air defence and passive radar systems, typically carrying anti-air missiles and deck guns, and can engage surface targets and submarines.

The security operation is led by An Garda Síochána, with potential assistance from the Irish Defence Forces. Attorney General Rossa Fanning previously warned about the legal complexities of involving a foreign military, particularly concerning rules of engagement and constitutional implications. Legal advice indicates the French crew retains the right to self-defence. The frigate is expected to remain outside Irish territorial waters, and its interaction with the Irish Naval Service in case of a threat remains unconfirmed. Defence Minister Helen McEntee expressed confidence in a safe and secure presidency.
