Six major Irish hospitals spent over €42 million on security between 2024 and 2025 due to concerns over antisocial behavior and violence. They also made hundreds of calls to An Garda Síochána regarding public order and safety incidents.
St James’s Hospital in Dublin had the highest spend at almost €11 million, including over €2.1 million for patient monitoring security officers. It made 112 calls to gardaí for interpersonal safety and 115 for antisocial behavior. Cork University Hospital spent almost €9.3 million, while University Hospital Galway recorded about €8.5 million, with significant increases in 2025.
Beaumont Hospital in Dublin spent almost €3.6 million and called gardaí 48 times in 2024 and 51 times in 2025. St Vincent’s Hospital, also in Dublin, spent around €4.87 million and contacted gardaí 77 times in 2024 and 88 times last year. The Mater Hospital in Dublin spent approximately €5.36 million on security.
