Dunderrow Abuse Victims Await State Redress 50 Years On, Taoiseach Suggests Mediation

Fifty years after sexual abuse at Dunderrow National School and 12 years after a European Court of Human Rights ruling, victims still await state redress. Taoiseach Micheál Martin has proposed an interdepartmental committee and mediation, despite the Civil Service's poor implementation record.

Fifty years after enduring sexual abuse by their teacher at Dunderrow National School, and 12 years following a European Court of Human Rights judgment that affirmed their entitlement to redress from the State, the victims are still awaiting resolution.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who has been aware of this protracted issue within his constituency, recently informed the women that an «interdepartmental committee» is examining the matter and expressed openness to «mediation.» This committee is presumably one of many tasked with reviewing unimplemented reports and policy commitments.

The Civil Service's track record regarding the implementation of such commitments is widely regarded as poor, yet this lack of action rarely results in accountability. The victims continue to seek the redress they were deemed entitled to over a decade ago.
