European Commission Proposes Extending Protection for Ukrainians Until 2028, Excluding Conscripts

The European Commission proposes extending temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. However, it will not cover conscripted men prohibited from leaving Ukraine. This decision considers Ukraine's needs and protects families integrated into the EU.

The European Commission has proposed extending temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. This proposal will not apply to newly arrived citizens who are prohibited from leaving Ukraine due to military obligations.

European Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that the proposal takes into account Ukraine's evolving defense and reconstruction needs. He emphasized that temporary protection should not be granted to newly arrived individuals who are not allowed to leave Ukraine due to their military obligations under Ukrainian law, as requested by Ukraine.

This issue was widely discussed with Ukrainian partners and EU member states. The aim is to protect families who have built lives in Europe and integrated into host societies, finding jobs and contributing to the EU economy. The next step will be the discussion and approval of the European Commission's proposal by the Council of the EU. The Temporary Protection Directive, introduced in March 2022, is currently valid until March 4, 2027.
