UK Pledges $381.5 Million for Ukraine's Energy and Justice System

Britain pledged nearly $381.5 million for Ukraine's recovery and energy security at the Gdańsk conference. The package includes nuclear fuel from Urenco, funding for wind farms, and justice system reforms, aiming to reduce reliance on Russian energy and strengthen institutions.

Britain has pledged nearly $381.5 million to help Ukraine rebuild and maintain its energy supply. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the recovery and energy-security package at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk.

The package includes nuclear fuel for Ukraine's reactors, funding for two new wind farms, business support, and an overhaul of the justice system. A key component is a $282 million deal for British firm Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine's state operator Energoatom, initially announced on June 16. This deal also supports over 4,500 jobs in the UK through Urenco's operations.

Part of the funding will modernize Ukraine's justice system to hold war criminals accountable, expedite court processes, and combat corruption. British International Investment will invest approximately $85 million into Ukraine's renewable energy and banking sectors, alongside the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, to build two new wind farms and support Ukrainian businesses via Bank Lviv.

This nuclear fuel deal further reduces Ukraine's reliance on Russian nuclear supply, as Kyiv has shifted its reactors from Russian fuel to Western assemblies since 2022. Urenco's enriched uranium, financed by UK Export Finance over two years, provides a non-Russian link in the supply chain, crucial as Moscow targets Ukraine's grid before winter. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy emphasized that lasting peace requires collective commitment to rebuilding communities and strengthening institutions, not just military support.
