Trinity College Dublin Study: M50 Congestion Worsens, Public Transport Demanded

A Trinity College Dublin study of 2,000 M50 motorists reveals increased journey times and negative impacts due to congestion. Motorists demand better public transport, but government infrastructure projects, including Metrolink and Luas extensions, face significant delays, causing public dissatisfaction.

A Trinity College Dublin study of 2,000 M50 motorists found journey times increased for most respondents over the past 12 months due to rising congestion. This negatively impacts social, economic, and general well-being.

Motorists overwhelmingly cited better public transport as the solution. While essential for CO2 reduction and quality of life, current services are insufficient and vulnerable, as shown by a recent Dart and rail stoppage in north Dublin due to overhead line damage in Raheny.

Government plans for transport upgrades, like Metrolink (proposed 2000, earliest delivery 2035), Luas extension to Finglas (2031), and Dart+ South West (construction not before 2030), face significant delays. This infrastructure deficit extends to housing, energy, water, and wastewater. An Oireachtas Committee report offers solutions, many of which are simple and long overdue.

The failure to deliver essential infrastructure contributes to public dissatisfaction and political pressure, despite recent signs that the Coalition recognizes the issue. However, delivery will inherently take considerable time.
