Record 8,798 People Sought Alcohol Treatment in 2025; Cocaine Use Up

A record 8,798 people sought alcohol treatment in the Republic in 2025, marking «clear changes» in drinking patterns. Cocaine use among these cases surged to 72 percent. This trend highlights increased demand for treatment and the need for early intervention strategies.

The Health Research Board reported «clear changes» in drinking patterns in the Republic, with a record 8,798 people seeking alcohol treatment in 2025. This continues an upward trend in demand for treatment.

Almost one-third of cases reported using another drug with alcohol. Cocaine was the most common additional drug at 72 percent, up from 42 percent in 2017. Cannabis followed at 50 percent, benzodiazepines at 17 percent, and opioids at 10 percent.

Men accounted for six in 10 cases in 2025, with a median age of 42; women had a median age of 44. The proportion of cases classified as alcohol-dependent fell from 72 percent in 2017 to 49 percent in 2025, while hazardous use increased from 10 percent to 16 percent, and harmful use from 16 percent to 30 percent. Daily alcohol consumption rose from 43 percent in 2017 to 58 percent in 2025. The median age of those seeking treatment increased from 41 in 2017 to 43 in 2025.

Dr. Anne Marie Carew, a senior researcher, noted that fewer people are presenting with alcohol dependence, but more are entering treatment for harmful or hazardous use, suggesting earlier engagement with services and highlighting the need for prevention and early intervention.
