Killian Burnett, 15, Died After 4 Cancelled Asthma Appointments; Family Receives Apology
Killian Burnett, 15, died in March 2022 from a severe asthma attack after four specialist appointments were cancelled. His brother, Jordan Burnett, received an apology from Children's Health Ireland today, advocating for timely asthma care for all children. An inquest ruled his death a medical misadventure.
Jordan Burnett, brother of 15-year-old Killian Burnett, who died from a severe asthma attack in March 2022, stated that «no child with asthma should be left waiting for care». Killian had four cancelled appointments for a respiratory medicine consultant between his first referral in December 2017 and his death. An inquest in November 2025 found he died due to medical misadventure.
Today, Children's Health Ireland issued a letter of apology in the High Court for shortcomings in the Dublin teenager's care. Jordan Burnett emphasized the seriousness of asthma, hoping Killian's death prompts better and timely treatment for children. He described Killian's fear of sleeping due to severe nighttime episodes and the devastating impact on his family, causing him lifelong PTSD.
Burnett urged people to trust their instincts regarding breathing problems, stressing that asthma is extremely serious and children require proper care. He expressed relief that his family received «the justice Killian deserved today», allowing them to move forward.
