Barnardo's: 36% of Families in Arrears on Energy Bills, 30% Lack Food

Barnardo's research shows 36% of families are in energy bill arrears and 30% lack sufficient food for children, up from 2025 figures. The charity urges increased Child Support Payment and Fuel Allowance to combat child poverty by 2030.

New research for Barnardo's reveals that 36% of families surveyed fell into arrears on energy bills over the last 12 months, an increase from 32% in 2025. The charity's «Cost of Living – Impact on Children 2026» report highlights financial pressures due to inflation.

The study found 30% of parents felt they lacked enough food for their children, up from 28% in 2025. Additionally, 44% of parents skipped meals or reduced portions for their children, and 16% used a food bank, an increase from 12% in 2025. Two in five parents borrowed money in the past year.

Barnardo's noted a steady increase in parents believing cost of living issues significantly affected their children, with 80% of families reporting negative impacts. Children in one-parent families were more likely to be significantly affected. The charity calls for increased Child Support Payment and Fuel Allowance, and reduced energy cost disparity for pre-paid meters, to help meet the 2030 child poverty target.
