Fuel Protest Organizer Plans New Blockades Over 32c Diesel Price Hike in August
James Geoghegan, a fuel protest organizer, is planning new blockades in Ireland due to a 32c diesel price increase expected in August. Emergency fuel excise reductions expire July 31, prompting calls for action including blocking Dublin, airports, and ports. Geoghegan aims to involve a wider group to stop future carbon tax rises.
James Geoghegan, an agricultural contractor and organizer of earlier fuel protests, is rallying support for new blockades in Ireland. This action is in response to a planned 32c increase to diesel prices in August, as emergency fuel excise reductions expire on July 31.
Geoghegan, a prominent figure in previous protests, stated that discussions are underway for actions like blocking Dublin, airports, or ports. He also mentioned potentially blocking Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Dublin on July 2-3 for Ireland’s EU presidency. The previous protests in April concluded after the government announced a €500 million relief package.
The coalition of farmers, agricultural contractors, and hauliers aims to stop future carbon tax rises. Geoghegan, who faces daily diesel bills of €400, emphasized that these new protests would involve a broader group, not just farmers. Plans include two public meetings to gather input on specific actions.
