Ireland registered 350 asylum claims last week, marking the highest weekly total since September 2024. These figures are detailed in the Government's IPAS Weekly Arrival report.
The report indicates that asylum was sought by 223 single males, 32 single females, 44 individuals in couples, three lone parent guardians, and 48 children during the seven-day period ending Sunday. The predominant nationality among claimants was Somali, accounting for 119 arrivals, followed by individuals from Pakistan, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Georgia.
Currently, 33,122 individuals are accommodated within the IPAS system, a decrease of 119 people from the 33,241 recorded in IPAS accommodation last December. In September, Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan stated that approximately 87.66% of international protection applicants are entering Ireland from Northern Ireland before claiming asylum.
Addressing the Oireachtas Committee on Justice and Migration, Mr. O'Callaghan explained, «They are coming from the United Kingdom, arriving into Northern Ireland and coming down claiming international protection in Ireland.»
