The Irish Refugee Council has received The Bar of Ireland's 2026 Human Rights Award for its work in protecting refugee rights. The award recognizes its leadership in supporting individuals and advocating for a fair protection system. The presentation will occur tomorrow at The Bar of Ireland’s annual Human Rights Conference, coinciding with World Refugee Day.

The Irish Refugee Council has been selected as the recipient of The Bar of Ireland's 2026 Human Rights Award. The non-governmental organization was recognized for its significant contributions to promoting and protecting the rights of refugees and individuals seeking international protection within Ireland.

The Bar of Ireland commended the Refugee Council for its exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment in this area, acknowledging its lasting impact on human rights protection in the State through both individual support and broader advocacy efforts. Simon Donagh BL, Chair of The Bar of Ireland Human Rights Committee, stated that the award acknowledges the Irish Refugee Council's dual influence: «supporting individuals navigating often complex legal processes, while also contributing meaningfully to the development of a fair, rights-based protection system».

As Ireland commences the implementation of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact, Seán Guerin SC, Chair of the Bar Council, emphasized the critical importance of a system founded on fair procedures, robust legal safeguards, and comprehensive access to legal representation at every stage. He asserted, «These are not optional; they are fundamental principles of justice.»

Nick Henderson, CEO of the Irish Refugee Council, expressed the organization's honor in receiving the award. He remarked, «It reflects the resilience and strength of the people we support, and our shared commitment to ensuring that dignity, fairness and protection are central to Ireland’s response to those seeking refuge.» Henderson further stressed the necessity of implementing the EU Migration and Asylum Pact in a manner that preserves access to justice, clarifies legal advice, and safeguards the rights of vulnerable individuals throughout the process. The award will be formally presented tomorrow at The Bar of Ireland’s annual Human Rights Conference, coinciding with World Refugee Day.
