Uisce Éireann Urges Water Conservation After Dublin Usage Hits 685 Million Litres

Uisce Éireann is urging national water conservation after Dublin's usage hit a record 685 million litres in one day. A survey revealed 31% of Irish adults are disengaged with conservation efforts. The utility emphasizes public cooperation despite infrastructure investments and reservoir recovery.

Uisce Éireann has urged households nationwide to conserve water, as demand can rapidly increase with rising temperatures. Despite a wet winter aiding reservoir recovery, this does not guarantee water security for all areas in the coming months.

During a recent hot spell, water usage in the Greater Dublin Area reached a record 685 million litres in a single day, 43 million litres (6.7%) above the year-to-date average of 642 million litres. Uisce Éireann described this as «unsustainable».

A survey of 1,003 adults by Ipsos/B&A for Uisce Éireann in Q1 2026 found 31% of Irish people admitted to being «unengaged» with water conservation. Margaret Attridge, Head of Water Operations, noted that water use typically rises during warm weather due to gardening, leisure, and tourism. Uisce Éireann continues to monitor supplies and takes proactive measures in some areas to prevent interruptions, despite ongoing infrastructure challenges.
