Ireland's €10 Million EV Scrappage Scheme for 1,177 Cars Oversubscribed by 700+
Ireland's €10 million EV scrappage scheme, launched in June, is already oversubscribed, with dealers reporting 1,900 deals for only 1,177 available slots. This could lead to disappointment for hundreds of buyers on July 1st. The scheme is expected to be reintroduced later in the year.
Ireland's €10 million EV scrappage scheme, launched in early June for cars registered in 2013, is already oversubscribed, according to dealers. The scheme funds 1,177 new EV purchases, while new EV sales are projected to exceed 30,000 this year.
Nigel Brennan, dealer principal at Hutton & Meade, stated that a straw poll of 116 dealers during a SEAI webinar revealed 1,900 scrappage deals had been made, exceeding available slots by about 700. With 250 dealers nationwide, many potential buyers may be disappointed on July 1st when eligibility is confirmed.
Dealers are offering purchases contingent on government assistance. The scheme mandates 65% of the budget for rural applicants. Brennan anticipates chaos on July 1st, with customers expecting grants potentially being denied. Despite issues, the scheme is encouraging trade-ins of older cars. It is expected to be reintroduced later this year or before the January 271 number plate switchover.
