Trial Begins for Riad Bouchaker, 52, in Dublin Knife Attack on Children

The trial of Riad Bouchaker, 52, an Algerian national, has commenced in Dublin following a November 2023 knife attack on primary schoolchildren. He faces charges including attempted murder and assault, denying all allegations. The jury has heard harrowing testimony from victims' parents and witnesses.

In November 2023, a group of primary schoolchildren were gathered by the railings outside their school in Dublin city centre, awaiting after-school care. As their minder attended to one child's coat, a man initiated a violent knife attack on the children.

The alleged assailant, Riad Bouchaker, 52, an Algerian national, was arrested at the scene. His trial is currently underway, where he faces charges of attempted murder concerning two girls and one boy. Additionally, he is charged with assault causing serious harm to a childcare worker and three counts of assault causing harm. Mr. Bouchaker denies all charges.

Eoin Reynolds is reporting from the court proceedings, where the jury has heard distressing testimony. This includes accounts from the parents of some victims, eyewitnesses, and individuals who intervened to stop the attack.

This report is presented by Bernice Harrison and produced by Declan Conlon.
