Muckamore Abbey Hospital Abuse Inquiry to Publish Report Today After 2022 Hearings
A public inquiry into alleged abuse at Muckamore Abbey Hospital, which began in June 2022, will publish its report today. The inquiry examined allegations concerning vulnerable patients at the Co Antrim facility, which was also central to the UK's largest police investigation into adult abuse.
A public inquiry investigating allegations of abuse against vulnerable patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital is scheduled to release its report later today. Muckamore Abbey, operated by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, was a Co Antrim hospital dedicated to adults with severe learning disabilities and mental health requirements.
The inquiry, initiated by former health minister Robin Swann, began hearing witness evidence in June 2022. It considered 333 statements and received oral testimony from 181 witnesses. Among those who participated was Glynn Brown, whose son Aaron was a patient at the hospital and had previously raised concerns about the facility. Statements were also provided by groups such as the Society of Parents and Friends of Muckamore Abbey and Action For Muckamore, alongside the Belfast Health Trust, the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority, and the police.
Chairman Tom Kark KC noted the unusual circumstance of a public inquiry running concurrently with a major police investigation and criminal trial proceedings. To prevent interference with criminal proceedings, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was established with the police and the Public Prosecution Service in Northern Ireland. The inquiry is expected to have submitted its final report to Northern Ireland's Health Minister Mike Nesbitt.
Muckamore Abbey Hospital has also been central to the UK's largest-ever police investigation into alleged abuse of vulnerable adults. The hospital, which opened in 1949, was initially slated for closure in June 2024, but this was postponed due to delays in securing alternative accommodation for some patients.
