Stephen Ogilvie, stabbed in north Belfast, is out of an induced coma but may lose sight in his right eye. Hadi Alodid, 30, is charged with attempted murder. The incident occurred amid anti-immigration disorder, leading to 35 arrests and 23 charges.

Stephen Ogilvie, the victim of a stabbing in north Belfast last week, has emerged from an induced coma, though his family reports he may lose sight in his right eye. Mr. Ogilvie sustained the loss of his left eye and suffered severe lacerations to his head, face, and back during the incident at Kinnaird Avenue.

Hadi Alodid, 30, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the attack. He appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court and is scheduled for his next court appearance via videolink on July 8.

Mr. Ogilvie's family expressed relief at his recovery from the coma and extended gratitude for the widespread kindness and generosity received. They acknowledged that he faces «significant challenges ahead,» including the potential loss of vision in his right eye. In a statement, the family remarked, «We have been truly humbled by the kindness of so many people, many of whom have never met our family.»

Alodid, a Sudanese national, entered Northern Ireland in February 2023 via bus from Dublin, having flown there from Paris. Upon arrival, he claimed asylum and was granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028. The stabbing incident occurred amidst anti-immigration disorder last week, which saw homes, cars, and a bus set ablaze, and individuals targeted based on their race. To date, 35 arrests have been made and 23 people charged in connection with the disorder.
