Irish Minister Warns of «Big Implications» if Aughinish Alumina Exports Aid Russian Military

Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Peter Burke, warned of severe consequences if Aughinish Alumina exports are found to support Russia's military. An investigation is underway, prompted by reports of significant alumina shipments to Russia, with concerns raised by the Ukrainian embassy regarding weapons production.

Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Peter Burke, warned of «big implications» for 1,000 jobs and European security if an investigation confirms Aughinish Alumina exports are used by Russia's military. The department is conducting a swift inquiry into whether the alumina is being turned into weapons for Russia's war in Ukraine, with results expected shortly.

The inquiry was prompted by an Irish Times report, citing Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures, that 83 percent of Ireland's alumina exports (200,619 tonnes) went to Russia in Q1 2026. Burke clarified that Aughinish Alumina had provided incorrect information to the CSO, which is now being rectified. The company previously told EU officials it sells half of its 1.8 million tonnes of annual production to EU customers and half to Russia.

Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly criticized the government's slow response, noting the Ukrainian embassy's concerns about continued sales to Russia for weapons production. Burke emphasized the need to determine the end-use of exports, acknowledging alumina's diverse applications, including medical devices and the automotive sector. He stated the investigation began immediately after The Irish Times report and involves contact with Swedish and Ukrainian authorities, with weekly updates to the European Commission.
