Irish Maternity Care Debate: Private vs. Public, Consultant Shortages, and Equity Concerns

A social media campaign advocates for private maternity care in Irish public hospitals, citing benefits like continuity and private rooms. However, claims of public system unsafety are refuted, and perinatal mortality rates are at a record low. The debate highlights inequities, consultant shortages, and the need for more funded consultant posts to ensure equitable care for all women.

A new social media campaign, @ourmaternitychoiceireland, advocates for retaining private maternity care in Irish public hospitals, citing desires for continuity of care, swift appointments, and private rooms. This comes amid a standoff between Rotunda obstetricians and Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill regarding maternity services.

Claims that removing private care access before public system issues are resolved would endanger women are unsubstantiated. Gabrielle Colleran, president of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association, states that Irish maternity hospitals have excellent outcomes and strong safety records for all patients. Perinatal mortality rates decreased across all socio-economic groups, reaching a record low in 2023.

Colleran refutes assumptions that women choose private care out of fear or that advocating for choice implies public care is unsafe. However, influential figures continue to make these arguments without acknowledging the publicly-funded infrastructure and essential services. Ireland has the lowest number of consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists per capita compared to similar jurisdictions, yet consultants are spared for private work.

Rebecca Moynihan, a Labour politician, highlighted the inequity, noting that as a public patient with multiple pregnancy losses, she never saw the consultants assigned to her, who both had private practices. She argues that taxpayers funding consultant salaries should expect equal care. Colleran suggests that if Minister Carroll MacNeill is serious about women's choice, she must fund more consultant posts. There is significant public support for the Minister's stance against vested interests.
