Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien will seek government approval today to revoke or amend the 32 million passenger cap at Dublin Airport. The Dublin Airport (Passenger Capacity) Bill 2026 is expected to become law before the Dáil’s summer recess in mid-July.
O’Brien stated the removal of the cap is crucial for economic growth, strengthening Ireland’s international connectivity, and sustaining jobs. A spokesperson added that the minister aims for sustainable and balanced growth, engaging with local communities regarding their concerns.
Despite warnings from the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport about potential legal challenges and gaps in the bill, O’Brien has been deeply involved in drafting the legislation to ensure its resilience. Environmental concerns regarding increased greenhouse gas emissions from more flights have also been raised.
