Irish Consumers Face €1,000 Annual Cost Increase Due to Middle East War, ECB Rate Hikes

Irish consumers face an annual cost increase of at least €1,000 due to the Middle East war and ECB interest rate hikes. Elevated prices for essential goods and services, including food, energy, and mortgages, are expected to persist for months. Experts warn of significant financial strain on households.

Irish consumers are projected to be at least €1,000 worse off annually due to the Middle East war's impact and European Central Bank (ECB) interest rate increases. Experts warn that even if a US-Iran deal holds, elevated prices for food, oil, gas, plastics, packaging, building materials, and fertiliser will persist for months.

The ECB recently increased interest rates, adding hundreds of euro to home loan costs for tens of thousands of mortgage holders. A second hike is anticipated, further pressuring tracker mortgage holders and those on fixed or variable rates later in the year. Daragh Cassidy of bonkers.ie noted that a €150,000 tracker mortgage over 10-15 years could see repayments rise by over €50 monthly, or €600 annually. Fixed mortgage rates for new customers are also expected to climb.

Simon MacAllister of EY Ireland stated that even with a peace deal, it will take months to restore pre-war oil and gas production, followed by a year for refineries to resynchronise. This will impact plastics, packaging, and fertiliser, driving up food costs due to more expensive diesel for planting and higher energy costs for processing. Construction material costs are also expected to spike, with firms hesitant to commit to fixed-price contracts.

Cassidy highlighted rising gas and electricity bills, with many consumers facing over €300 annual increases, and further hikes possible. He warned that markets may not have fully priced in the damage to Middle East energy infrastructure, suggesting food prices could still surge as food production is highly energy-intensive.
