Keir Starmer Proposes UK Ban on Under-16s from Social Media, Citing «Australia Plus» Model

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer proposes banning under-16s from social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, calling it an «Australia plus» model. This comprehensive restriction aims to protect young people online. The initiative follows Australia's plan to implement a similar nationwide ban by December 2025.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a comprehensive ban on social media access for individuals under 16, encompassing platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X. Starmer described these sweeping restrictions as an «Australia plus» model, emphasizing that «a full ban is the right choice» and acknowledging, «this is not something I do lightly.»

The proposed ban targets all major social platforms. Additionally, online products not covered by the direct ban, such as gaming applications, will face new restrictions, including the removal of options to chat with strangers.

This initiative follows Australia's precedent, which in December 2025 will become the first country globally to implement a nationwide social media ban for children under 16. Australia's restrictions apply to ten major platforms: TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, X, Threads, Snapchat, Twitch, and Kick. UK government sources have indicated that its ban on large platforms would extend to a similar array of applications.

The Irish Times is soliciting public opinion on whether Ireland should adopt similar measures, asking readers to consider the efficacy of a blanket ban and share their experiences with children under 16 using social media.
