G7 Leaders to Discuss Increased Pressure on Russia After Night Attack on Ukraine and Damage to Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
G7 leaders at the summit in France will discuss increasing pressure on Russia after a massive night shelling of Ukraine, which led to casualties and damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the need to involve Putin in negotiations. President Zelenskyy also expects a G7 reaction.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that G7 leaders at the summit in France will discuss increasing pressure on the Russian Federation to end the war following another massive shelling of Ukraine. She communicated this on the social network X, as reported by «European Pravda».
Von der Leyen noted that last night Ukraine suffered powerful shelling, resulting in civilian casualties, and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sustained serious damage. «Today, G7 leaders are meeting in Évian. We will discuss further steps aimed at increasing pressure on Russia, engaging Putin in the negotiation process, and ending this senseless killing,» emphasized the President of the European Commission.
According to her, Europe and the Ukrainian people seek peace, while Russia has once again demonstrated its interest only in violence and destruction. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expects a reaction from the G7 countries in response to the massive Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities.
Media outlets previously reported that European leaders intend to use meetings with US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit to engage him in plans to facilitate new peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Prior to the G7 summit, President Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with Trump, during which the leaders agreed to discuss additional ideas for bringing peace closer.
