ECB President Lagarde Notes Widespread Inflationary Effects, Defends Rate Hikes Amid Middle East War

ECB President Christine Lagarde confirmed that high energy prices are causing widespread inflation, defending recent interest rate hikes. She emphasized the need to curb inflation to prevent long-term economic damage, even as the ECB considers further increases amid Middle East conflict and welcomes a potential Strait of Hormuz reopening.

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has stated that elevated energy prices are increasingly impacting broader sectors of the economy. In an interview with France Culture on Monday, Lagarde remarked, «We have absolutely started to see indirect effects of inflation more or less everywhere in recent weeks.»

Last week, the ECB implemented its first interest rate hike since 2023, a decision influenced by escalating price pressures stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. Officials are considering a potential second increase as early as their July meeting. Policymakers, including Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel, anticipate that prices will remain high for an extended period, even if the conflict in Iran were to conclude promptly.

Lagarde addressed concerns from some ECB observers regarding the potential economic repercussions of rising borrowing costs. She acknowledged, «I hear criticism – often from France, and I understand them – 'they’re taking measures and it will kill growth.'» However, she emphasized the necessity of combating inflation: «But I have to kill inflation if it awakens because if inflation gets out of the bottle, getting it back in again will be much more difficult and costly, and a long-term inflation situation is unacceptable for neither consumers nor businesses, and I wouldn’t be fulfilling my mission.»

Her comments followed reports that the United States and Iran had reached an interim agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Lagarde welcomed this development, stating, «If this news is confirmed by developments in coming days and the signature of a memorandum of understanding, it’s good news, we can only welcome it, above all if it means reopening and de-mining the Strait of Hormuz.»
