Elon Musk Criticized for Amplifying Anti-Immigrant Narratives Amid Belfast Riots
Elon Musk faces criticism for amplifying anti-immigrant narratives on X, contributing to millions of views amid Belfast riots. Researchers link his posts to calls for violence after a knife attack led to charges. This coincides with Musk becoming the world’s first trillionaire after SpaceX’s IPO.
Elon Musk, recently named the world’s first trillionaire, faces renewed criticism after researchers linked his amplification of violent narratives on X to anti-immigrant riots in Belfast. Clashes erupted after a knife attack on Monday, leading to the PSNI charging Sudanese national Hadi Alodid, 30, with attempted murder.
Musk amplified calls for protest from anti-immigration activist Tommy Robinson and Rupert Lowe of Restore Britain, reaching millions of his 240 million X followers. The Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) reported that posts from Musk, Robinson, and Lowe about Belfast garnered over 115 million views, with Musk contributing 64 million (55%). CCDH founder Imran Ahmed stated Musk’s amplification was instrumental in spreading anti-migrant narratives and calls for violence, with over 3,900 comments advocating lynchings and other crimes against immigrants.
Robinson’s account was reinstated after Musk’s 2022 acquisition of X, having previously been banned. PSNI chief constable Jon Boutcher vowed to pursue those inciting rioting online, urging people to disregard “nonsense” from individuals unfamiliar with Northern Ireland’s history. He declined to name individuals but confirmed investigations would occur, similar to successful prosecutions after 2025 riots in Ballymena. This criticism coincides with Musk becoming the world’s first trillionaire after SpaceX’s Wall Street debut raised over $75 billion.
