Lucan Resident Challenges O’Flynn's Call for Liffey Valley Rezoning Amid Infrastructure Concerns

Lucan resident Rita O’Brien challenges builder Michael O’Flynn’s proposal for a 500-unit development on St. Edmundsbury lands. O’Brien argues Lucan has already accommodated significant housing growth without adequate infrastructure, citing issues with public transport and school places. She urges local representatives to consider voters’ concerns over O’Flynn’s call for rezoning.

In a letter to local representatives, builder Michael O’Flynn advocated for the rezoning of St. Edmundsbury lands, adjacent to the River Liffey, to facilitate a proposed development of over 500 units. O’Flynn, whose call for Liffey Valley site rezoning was reported on June 11th, stated, «it is incumbent on all of us to take responsibility and play our part in housing our people.»

However, Rita O’Brien of Lucan, Co Dublin, argues that Lucan has already significantly contributed to housing thousands of people in areas extending towards Clondalkin, Celbridge, and Palmerstown, with minimal corresponding infrastructural improvements. She highlights that development is still ongoing in the two Strategic Development Zones (SDZs) nearby, Adamstown and Clonburris.

O’Brien questions whether O’Flynn comprehends the severe strain on existing public transport, noting the difficulty residents face in securing seats on buses or trains during peak hours. Furthermore, she points out the long-standing challenge many parents in Lucan encounter in finding creche or school places for their children.

She concludes by expressing anticipation regarding whether local representatives will prioritize O’Flynn’s proposal or the concerns of Lucan voters.
