MMA Coach John Kavanagh Shares Misleading Climate Graph Indicating Ireland is Warming
MMA coach John Kavanagh shared a misleading graph suggesting Ireland's climate is stable, but it actually shows significant warming. The graph's flawed design, with cherry-picked data and distorted timelines, obscures that four of the five hottest springs on record have occurred since 2023. Real data confirms Ireland is experiencing increasing weather extremes due to human-caused climate change.
MMA coach John Kavanagh shared a misleading graph on June 4, claiming it showed Ireland's climate was steady, implying concern over climate change is excessive. However, the graph, titled «Provisional Top 10 warmest Springs» from 1900 to 2026, actually indicates Ireland is getting drastically warmer, with four of the five hottest springs on record occurring since 2023.
The graph's design is problematic. Its Y-axis displays only the top 10 hottest springs, excluding all other years, creating an artificially flat line. The X-axis, labeled as chronological, is also distorted, with uneven spacing between years. For example, the first half of the graph covers 66 years, while the latter half covers only nine years, despite points being evenly spaced.
When the data is properly visualized with accurate time spacing, it clearly shows that Ireland's hottest years are increasingly recent. Met Éireann's own data and Maynooth University research confirm increasing weather extremes in Ireland, attributing recent record temperatures to human-caused climate change. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also warned on June 2 about extreme weather risks due to unusually warm ocean waters, urging urgent climate action.
