Nurse Chased in Belfast Amid Anti-Immigration Riots; Police Vow Action Against Incitement

A nurse was chased into a Belfast hospital by four masked men in a suspected racist attack amid anti-immigration riots. Despite the incident, she completed her shift. Police are vowing to pursue those inciting the unrest, which has seen many overseas workers targeted and intimidated, severely impacting healthcare services.

A nurse was chased into Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, Belfast, by four masked men on Wednesday night in a suspected racist attack amidst anti-immigration riots. Despite the trauma, she completed her shift, a stark contrast to the attackers' behavior. This incident follows a knife attack on Stephen Ogilvie on Monday night, after which overseas workers have been targeted and intimidated.

Patricia McKeown of Unison stated that those targeted, including nurses and social care workers, are primarily people of color or from overseas, calling it «racism, pure and simple». Ogilvie's family condemned the disorder, praising migrants' contributions to healthcare and hospitality. The South Eastern Trust, overseeing Ulster Hospital, condemned the racist attack and the nurse's bravery.

Northern Ireland's Health and Social Care Trusts warned that unrest profoundly impacts services, with many international staff too frightened to work. McKeown noted that the threat to overseas members was immediate after Monday's incident, requiring protection and alternative accommodation. She also warned that the unrest is orchestrated by a far-right leadership, possibly with paramilitary involvement, using social media to stir hatred.

PSNI chief constable Jon Boutcher vowed to pursue those inciting rioting online, urging people to disregard «nonsense» and «idiots». Ryan Williams, CEO of Connected Health NI, highlighted the healthcare system's reliance on skilled migrant carers and nurses. His company has moved staff and taken people off shifts due to safety concerns, emphasizing the critical role these carers play for vulnerable individuals.
