Kaja Kallas Expects Positive Decisions on EU Loan of €90 Billion for Ukraine on April 22

EU Chief Diplomat Kaja Kallas expects positive decisions on a €90 billion loan for Ukraine on April 22. She stressed the aid's importance as a signal to Russia. Kallas also hopes for unblocking sanctions against Russia.

The Chief Diplomat of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, stated before the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting that she expects positive decisions regarding the European Union's loan of 90 billion euros for Ukraine on Wednesday, April 22.

Kallas emphasized Ukraine's critical need for this loan, noting that it would also send an important signal to Russia that its strategy of attrition will not succeed. «We will discuss the war in Ukraine and expect some positive decisions tomorrow regarding the 90 billion euro loan. Ukraine truly needs this loan. And this will also be a signal that Russia will not be able to last longer than Ukraine; this is very important now», she underscored.

The diplomat also expressed hope for the swift unblocking of decisions regarding new sanctions against Russia, which are currently at an impasse due to Hungary's position.

It is worth recalling that late last week, on April 17–18, a European Commission delegation held technical meetings in Budapest with Hungary's future Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, and his team. Péter Magyar had previously indicated that he would not block the EU loan of 90 billion euros for Ukraine, as the decision had already been made, but confirmed that Budapest would not participate in it. EU ambassadors will attempt to definitively approve the 90 billion euros for Ukraine on April 22.
