EU Leaders to Discuss Eastern Flank Reinforcement on June 19 Due to Drone Incursions, Including Russian Drone in Romania
EU leaders will discuss reinforcing the Eastern Flank on June 18-19 in Brussels due to systematic drone incursions, including a Russian drone that crashed in Romania on May 29. European Council President António Costa emphasized the need to strengthen defense capabilities.
During the European Council meeting scheduled for June 18-19 in Brussels, leaders of the European Union member states will discuss responses to recent systematic drone incursions into EU airspace. Particular attention will be given to reinforcing the EU's Eastern Flank.
This information is contained in an invitation letter to EU leaders from European Council President António Costa, the text of which is at the disposal of «European Pravda». The summit will address the EU's response to drone incursions into its airspace.
The letter states: «Recent drone incursions into EU airspace, including the crash of a Russian drone with explosives into a residential building in Romania, underscore the urgency of advancing our common agenda on defense readiness, particularly by strengthening the EU's eastern flank». António Costa noted that the EU has already «made progress in defense spending and capabilities», but, according to him, much more remains to be done.
According to «European Pravda» sources, the discussion on the EU's response to drone threats will take place on June 19. Previously, on the night of May 29, a Russian attack drone crashed into the roof of a residential high-rise building in Galați, Romania, exploding, breaching it, and causing a fire. Two residents were injured. Additionally, NATO fighter jets have twice shot down drones over the Baltic states – one over Estonia and another over Latvia. In recent months, dozens of drones have either crashed or exited the airspace of «friends of Ukraine».
