Widow Calls for Mental Health Overhaul After Husband's Post-Discharge Suicide in Dublin
Caroline Kane, widow of Gareth Kane, who died by suicide after discharge from a Dublin mental health unit, has settled a High Court action against the HSE and St Vincent's Healthcare Group. She is calling for a national overhaul of mental health services, citing alleged failures in her husband's care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Caroline Kane, the widow of Gareth Kane, who died by suicide the day after being discharged from a Dublin hospital's mental health unit, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of mental health services in Ireland. Her appeal follows the settlement of a High Court action she brought against the Health Service Executive (HSE) and St Vincent's Healthcare Group.
The court was informed that 39-year-old Gareth Kane, a father of three from Dundrum, Dublin, and a well-known musician who played bass for David Keenan, died on October 9, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior Counsel Jeremy Maher alleged that failures in care contributed to Mr. Kane's death, which occurred at home the day after his discharge from St Vincent's University Hospital. Mr. Maher emphasized that Mr. Kane's death should have been preventable.
Court proceedings revealed that Mr. Kane was initially hospitalized on September 1, 2020, and discharged days later. He subsequently had telephone consultations before being readmitted on September 30, 2020, to the Elm Mount unit. He remained there until his discharge on October 8, 2020. It was contended that both discharges were inappropriate and that there was a failure to provide an adequate treatment plan or to keep him hospitalized until his depression was adequately addressed. The defendants denied these claims, and the settlement was reached through mediation without an admission of liability.
Following the settlement, Caroline Kane stated that her husband experienced a depressive episode during the pandemic and genuinely desired recovery. Expressing profound disappointment, she remarked, «I feel 100% let down. The worst part for me is my kids are left without their father.» She urged the government to recognize the urgent need for a complete restructuring of the nation's mental health services.
