Lithuanian Man Convicted for Attacking Cyclist Over Ukrainian Symbols
A Lithuanian court convicted a man for attacking a cyclist wearing Ukrainian symbols on March 27, 2025. The assailant caused injuries and property damage, motivated by hatred for Ukraine supporters. He received a non-custodial sentence and must compensate the victim.
A Lithuanian court has convicted a man, born in 1987, for attacking a cyclist on March 27, 2025, in Širvintos district. The man drove his car to block the cyclist, who was wearing a shirt with Ukrainian symbols, after the cyclist refused to remove it. The cyclist fell, sustaining injuries and damaging his bicycle.
The assailant then demanded the shirt again, grabbed it, and struck the cyclist, breaking his phone as he tried to call for help. The Vilnius Regional District Court found the man guilty of damaging property and causing minor bodily harm. The court ruled that hatred towards people supporting Ukraine was an aggravating circumstance, stemming from the man's animosity towards the victim for publicly backing Ukraine against Russia's invasion.
The court imposed a non-custodial sentence of one year and three months' restriction of liberty. During this period, he must work or register as a jobseeker and complete a program for violent behavior. He is also ordered to compensate the victim for material and non-material harm and repay Lithuania's State Patient Fund for medical treatment costs. Prosecutor Edvinas Navickas led the investigation, and the verdict, issued on May 12, is final.
