Irish Rail has reported 31 incidents at level crossings this year, with 11 resulting in injuries or damage. These incidents are attributed to pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers misusing automated crossings by proceeding when warning lights flash.
Lansdowne XR001 in Dublin accounts for 11 incidents, Serpentine for five, and a crossing in Bray, Co Wicklow, for six. Garda cameras are being installed at key locations to automatically issue fines of €160 for speeding or €80 for breaking a red light, plus three penalty points, to deter risk-taking.
Irish Rail, in partnership with gardaí and the Road Safety Authority, is participating in International Level Crossing Awareness Day. The network currently has 848 level crossings, and Irish Rail aims to close more, having shut 150 since 2014, including six this year.
