ESRI Study: Public and Experts Differ on Obesity Causes and Solutions

An ESRI study found a gap between public and expert views on obesity causes. The public blames individual choices, while experts cite environmental factors. This difference impacts perceived responsibility and preferred policy solutions, highlighting the need for a shift in public dialogue on obesity.

A new study by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) reveals a significant gap between public and expert views on the causes of the obesity epidemic. The study compared perceptions of 2,400 adults across Ireland, the UK, and the US with 51 experts in obesity healthcare, research, and policy.

The public primarily attributes obesity to individual diet and exercise choices, while experts emphasize environmental factors like changes in food production, marketing, portion sizes, and car-dependent neighborhoods. Although the public recognizes some environmental causes, they rate individual choices as equally or more important. The Irish public was least likely to identify environmental causes.

Both groups view obesity as a serious public health issue, and the public is knowledgeable about obesity rates and consequences. However, the public assigns more responsibility to individuals than to businesses or governments. Experts, aligning with scientific evidence, attribute significantly more responsibility to governments and businesses.

Regarding solutions, the public supports information campaigns and healthier food subsidies. Experts favor more interventionist policies, such as taxes and regulations on fat, salt, and sugar content, deeming them fairer and more effective. Deirdre Robertson, lead author, noted the individual choice narrative contributes to stigma and undermines public health efforts. Prof. Mary Horgan, Chief Medical Officer, stressed that obesity is a complex disease, not a personal failing, requiring a multipronged solution and a shift in public dialogue.
