Co Meath Crèche Reports Up to 175 Room Closures Since October Due to Staffing
A Co Meath crèche has seen up to 175 room closures since October due to staff shortages, impacting parents. Providers attribute this to core funding limiting competitive wages. Tigers Childcare acknowledges 134 closures at one center, citing recruitment challenges and garda vetting delays.
Parents of children attending a Co Meath crèche have reported up to 175 room closures since October last year due to staffing shortages. Tigers Childcare, which operates 34 centers and uses the state's core funding scheme, acknowledges 134 closures at its Enfield center, though many were partial.
Providers like Tigers Childcare state that the core funding scheme, which caps weekly fees, limits their ability to offer competitive wages, leading to staff shortages and subsequent room closures. This forces parents to use annual leave, pay for babysitters, or rely on family, causing significant stress and disruption to work-life balance. Parents are refunded for affected days, but many cannot switch providers due to a lack of available childcare places.
One parent at the Enfield center noted frequent five-day closures, sometimes with little notice. Another parent at the Knocklyon Lodge center, acquired by Tigers in February, reported closures and reduced flexibility that were not present before the acquisition. Tigers Childcare CEO Karen Clince confirmed staffing-related closures are widespread and a last resort, citing garda vetting delays of up to seven weeks as a major recruitment challenge. She expressed understanding for parents' frustration and the impact on families.
