Irish Defence Forces Face Ammunition Shortage Amid Global Scarcity

The Irish Defence Forces are experiencing an ammunition shortage, impacting training and effectiveness, due to global scarcity driven by international conflicts and large-scale rearmament programs. This situation makes procurement particularly challenging for Department of Defence (DOD) officials.

Wars in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Africa, coupled with massive EU rearmament, have significantly increased demand for defense equipment, including ammunition. Manufacturers also face difficulties sourcing key ingredients like propellent due to chemical scarcity. Ireland's procurement process involves the Defence Forces identifying needs, which the DOD then seeks on the international market.

Options for sourcing include BAE Systems, Rheinmetall, Leonardo, and KNDS. The Irish Government has recently engaged in government-to-government defense procurement agreements with France and Italy. A DOD spokesman confirmed that the war in Ukraine and increased Defence Force recruitment have heightened demand, creating supply chain bottlenecks. The DOD is adopting a more collaborative procurement approach, including government-to-government engagement and European Defence Agency frameworks, to ensure continuous supply.
