Pre-COP31 Talks in Bonn Address Fossil Fuel Dependency, Green Transition Urgency

Pre-COP31 talks (SB64) in Bonn have commenced, with Murat Kurum and Chris Bowen highlighting the critical need to accelerate the clean energy transition. They emphasized reducing fossil fuel dependency due to unstable energy markets and climate crises, aiming to advance key negotiations before the COP31 summit in Turkey.

Technical talks, SB64, have begun in Bonn ahead of the COP31 climate summit in Antalya, Turkey, in November. Murat Kurum, the designated COP31 President, highlighted the risks of relying on imported fossil fuels and stressed the urgency of accelerating the clean energy transition amidst unstable energy markets and increasing debt.

Kurum emphasized that the Bonn talks are crucial for advancing core negotiation tracks, including the mitigation work programme for greenhouse gas reduction and the just transition work programme for financial aid to poorer nations. This progress is essential to allow COP31 to focus on high-level political decisions.

Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, also addressed the conference, noting the current "worst energy crisis in our history" and the escalating natural disasters. He asserted that solutions lie in increased clean energy, electrification, reduced fossil fuel dependence, and enhanced energy sovereignty. The SB64 conference is scheduled to conclude on June 18.
