Sligo Council Calls for Early Morning Rail Service Amid Accommodation Shortage

Sligo County Council is pressing Irish Rail for an early morning train service to Sligo by 8:30 AM to address an accommodation shortage for students and commuters. Current services arrive too late. Research shows high demand, but Irish Rail cites funding limitations, though they are keeping the proposal under review.

Sligo County Council is urging Irish Rail to introduce an early morning train service to Sligo, arriving by 8:30 AM, to support students and commuters facing an accommodation shortage. The current earliest westbound service on the Dublin–Sligo line arrives at 10:16 AM, which councillors deem incompatible with modern commuting needs.

Cllr Edel McSharry's motion, unanimously supported, highlighted research indicating strong demand. An Atlantic Technological University (ATU) paper found 47,000 people live near the Sligo–Longford line, with 90% of 529 respondents willing to use a service arriving before 9 AM. A separate ATU Sligo Students’ Union study of 1,701 respondents revealed 64% of students reported accommodation issues negatively impacting their studies or enrollment.

Councillors emphasized that improved rail connectivity would reduce traffic, carbon emissions, and support regional development, employers, and education providers like ATU Sligo. Irish Rail acknowledges the demand for an early morning Longford to Sligo service and keeps it under review, but states current Public Service Obligation funding does not facilitate its introduction. They hope to implement it when funding and resources allow, pending National Transport Authority approval.
