M50 Toll Evaders Fined €434,000: 18 Motorists, One Owed 1,087 Trips

Dublin District Court fined 18 M50 toll evaders €434,000, with one driver owing 1,087 trips. Judge Anthony Halpin emphasized road importance, while a 65-year-old grandmother received detention for mitigating circumstances. This highlights strict enforcement against habitual non-payers.

Dublin District Court fined 18 M50 toll evaders a total of €434,000. Judge Anthony Halpin stressed the importance of roads, stating that most defendants ignore proceedings. Sixteen motorists, including Reece Quinn who had 1,087 unpaid tolls, received the maximum €25,000 fine in their absence. One commercial vehicle owner was also fined the maximum for 79 unpaid journeys.

A 65-year-old grandmother was the only defendant to attend, having paid for 281 of 460 trips. Her defence counsel, Bakshi Mohit, cited mitigating factors like frequent drives to care for elderly parents. Judge Halpin ordered her detention in the court precinct under Section 12 of the 1914 Criminal Justice Administration Act, a provision allowing detention instead of a prison sentence.

No-show defendants were also ordered to pay €350 in costs within three months. Prosecuting counsel Thomas Rice confirmed each defendant faced five sample counts, with evidence including vehicle records, payment history, and images. The court can impose fines up to €5,000 per charge or a six-month sentence, but habitual non-payers are typically prosecuted. The standard private car toll is €3.80, with surcharges and court proceedings for non-payment.
