Aer Lingus is cancelling or rescheduling approximately 500 flights, about 2 percent of its total, affecting tens of thousands of holidaymakers in the coming weeks. The airline attributes these disruptions to mandatory aircraft maintenance and schedule adjustments. This comes amidst broader concerns about potential widespread airline cancellations due to jet fuel shortages, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, making the situation volatile.

Under EU Regulation 261, passengers whose flights are cancelled are entitled to a refund or rerouting on the next available flight, or at a later time of their choosing. Compensation is applicable only if the cancellation occurs less than two weeks before departure. Aer Lingus advises affected customers who booked via their website or app to rebook, change their flight, or request a voucher or cash refund. For those stranded overseas, the airline is obliged to provide care, including food, accommodation, transport, and refunds for reasonable expenses, until they can be flown home. Passengers with package holidays are fully protected, with the tour operator responsible for all trip elements, offering alternative holidays or refunds, and ensuring return travel if cancellations occur abroad. However, those who booked flights, accommodation, and car hire separately are in a weaker position. While entitled to flight refunds, rerouting, and potential compensation, they cannot claim back costs for missed hotel stays or other separate expenses like car hire.

To mitigate risks, experts recommend booking with a tour operator or securing the most comprehensive travel insurance available, upgrading existing policies if necessary. For DIY bookings, choosing accommodation with flexible cancellation policies is advisable. It is not recommended to delay booking flights, as airlines are likely to cut busy routes first, prioritizing passengers who have already booked.
